“PLM Innovation Live provides this by allowing companies to benchmark their product development with their peers, enhance their PLM learning across their businesses and improve their capacity for cost effective innovation.”

New report reveals the true risk posed to supply chains by volcanic eruptions and flight cancellations

November 9th, 2010

In the week that Mount Merapi’s worst eruption in a century spewed volcanic ash 8km into the air, leading some airlines to suspend flights, Walpole Research has released the results of its study into the business impact of the Icelandic volcano and lessons to be learnt from the Ash Cloud.

London, United Kingdom, 11/09/2010

The report questioned 250 senior executives worldwide to quantify the supply chain disruption caused by the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull which led to the cancellation of over 100,000 flights across European airspace through April and May 2010.

The report reveals the true extent of the Ash Cloud’s impact with over 80% of companies reporting a negative financial consequence. In terms of one off events, the Ash Cloud’s impact rated second only to the 9’11 terrorist attacks. The report goes on to detail the disparity between industries affected. Most noticeable was the Electronics sector which saw severity 2½ times higher than the cross industry average. One ray of hope was news that companies who responded effectively with good crises management to the Ash Cloud gained a significant competitive advantage: 66% of organisations who did so won new customers.

The events in Indonesia serve to remind business leaders and supply chain risk professionals of the potential dangers posed by such events. Thomas Boughton a Director at Walpole Research comments that “Businesses need to engage proactively with the risks posed. Further disruption to air traffic networks in the medium-long term is inevitable. Growth in air cargo volumes, increasing complexity of globalised supply chains, and the continued use of Just-In-Time practices will exacerbate the impact of these future air space closures.”
The report also details:

  • The role of lean inventory levels, buffer stocks to mitigate future supply chain shocks at the cost of operational efficiency, complex logistics on productivity and revenue.
  • Future volcanic risks and threats to air space closures including Eyjafjallajökul, Katla, European and non-European volcanoes the role of wind conditions and changing aviation protocols.
  • Analyses the role of global sourcing, outsourced manufacturing, supply chain visibility, supplier base and communications strategy.
  • Compares the impact of 9’11, Avian Influenza, Saars and other pandemics, Hurricane Katrina, The World Cup, terrorism, industrial action and labour disputes, protectionism, piracy and theft, input price volatility and currency fluctuations partner failure.
  • Recommends means to improve Supply chain resiliency through business continuity planning, partner collaboration, logistics mix, supplier risk audits, dedicated risk management teams, supply chain analytics, reducing lead times, increasing inventory, event management, diversifying suppliers, insurance, disaster recovery
  • Copies of the report, Supply Chain Resiliency: The business impact of the Icelandic volcano and lessons to be learnt from the Ash Cloud, can be accessed via the Walpole Research website www.walpoleresearch.com
